Orchard Road Is Hungrier Than It Looks

· Authors Insight,My Taste of SG Admin
A flat-lay view of a table spread featuring pineapple fried rice served inside a carved pineapple boat topped with grilled prawns and cashews. Surrounding the main dish are a vibrant stir-fried vegetable bowl, prawn crackers, iced drinks, and a white daisy accent.

For many visitors, Orchard Road is where Singapore goes shopping.

The towering malls, luxury boutiques, and polished storefronts make it easy to assume the district is all about fashion labels and flagship stores. But look a little closer, and another Orchard begins to appear—one that smells of sizzling grills, simmering broths, freshly brewed coffee, and butter melting into crisp toast.

Orchard Road is hungrier than it looks.

Behind designer displays and beneath escalators, there is an entire world of dining that often steals the spotlight from the shopping itself. Office workers queue for ramen before noon. Friends gather around bubbling hotpots after work. Families linger over Peranakan feasts, while late-night diners tuck into Korean stews and Japanese skewers long after the stores have closed.

At My Taste of Singapore, we believe every meal tells a story, and Orchard Road has plenty to share. The beauty of Orchard's food scene is its variety. A few minutes' walk can take you from an elegant omakase counter to a humble bowl of laksa, from artisanal pastries to smoky yakitori grilled over charcoal. The district rewards curiosity. Sometimes the best meal is not inside the newest mall but hidden in an older building where loyal regulars have been returning for years.

Places like Cuppage Plaza remind us that Orchard's identity extends beyond polished storefronts. Here, narrow corridors lead to intimate Japanese restaurants, family-run Korean eateries, and cosy izakayas that feel worlds away from the bustling shopping belt outside. These are the places where conversations stretch over shared plates, chefs greet familiar faces, and the food quietly builds its own reputation.

Even the malls themselves have evolved. Dining is no longer an afterthought between shopping stops—it has become a destination in its own right. People now plan entire afternoons around lunch reservations, dessert cafés, specialty coffee shops, and dinner experiences, treating Orchard Road as much like a food neighbourhood as a retail one.

Perhaps that is what makes Orchard so interesting. It never asks you to choose between shopping and eating. The two exist side by side, each giving you a reason to stay a little longer.

So the next time you find yourself walking beneath Orchard Road's bright lights, don't just look into the shop windows. Follow the aroma drifting out of basement food halls, upstairs restaurants, and tucked-away side streets. You may arrive thinking about what to buy, but there's a good chance you'll leave talking about what you ate.

Because beneath all the glass, glamour, and luxury, Orchard Road has always had a healthy appetite.

💌 With a love for local flavours,
